Everything You Need to Know About Driving Through Mexico to Belize — Including Safety Tips, Stops, and Travel Advice

Yes — You Can Drive to Belize!

Many travelers are surprised to learn that it’s possible to drive all the way from the United States to Belize. It’s an adventurous, scenic journey that takes you through Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula before reaching the Belize border.

Whether you’re an explorer, digital nomad, or retiree heading south for the winter, this guide covers everything you need to know — from toll roads to safe hotels, border crossings, and final destination tips.

The Route at a Glance

The most common driving route starts in Laredo, Texas, then follows Mexico’s main highways:

1️⃣ Laredo → Monterrey → Ciudad Victoria → Tampico

2️⃣ Tampico → Veracruz → Villahermosa

3️⃣ Villahermosa → Escárcega → Chetumal (on the Belize border)

Once in Chetumal, you can cross into Corozal, Belize, and continue to Placencia or Belmopan.

Border & Legal Requirements

Before you go, make sure to have:

  • A valid passport and U.S. driver’s license

  • A Temporary Vehicle Import Permit (TIP) from Mexican customs

  • Mexican car insurance (U.S. policies don’t cover Mexico)

  • Belize car insurance and import permit (available at the Belize border)

  • Original vehicle registration or title

💡 Tip: Keep multiple printed copies of all documents for checkpoints.

Stick to Toll Roads (Cuotas)

Always use toll roads (autopistas de cuota) when possible. They are:

  • Well maintained

  • Safer than free roads

  • Quicker and more direct

Bring cash pesos for toll booths — most do not take cards.

Don’t Drive at Night

Driving after dark is not recommended in Mexico due to:

  • Limited lighting and signage

  • Livestock and unexpected speed bumps

  • Fewer services and emergency access

Plan your drive so that you arrive before sunset in each overnight stop.
