The Placencia sign is a vibrant and artistic landmark located at the southern end of the Placencia Peninsula in Belize. This colorful sign, officially unveiled in early 2022, is a collaborative effort between local artists, businesses, and donors.
It's designed to represent the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the village.
The sign features nine letters, each adorned with unique images that depict various aspects of Placencia's natural beauty and local life.
For example, the first two letters show a beautiful sunrise, while the next image portrays two fishermen in action. Other letters include a salt-water tarpon, a diver with a whale shark, a blue morpho butterfly, a scarlet macaw, and a jaguar. The sign is a perfect backdrop for vacation photos and has quickly become a popular spot for both tourists and locals.
The project began in 2019 with funding from the Belize Tourism Board, but due to the pandemic, the project was temporarily halted. Once the economy rebounded, the Placencia business community decided to pool their resources to complete the sign. The result is a stunning piece of public art that captures the essence of this charming fishing village.
