Planning a trip to Belize? After living and working here for years, I’ve seen travelers arrive perfectly prepared… and others who wish they’d packed just a few different things.

Whether you’re heading to Placencia’s beaches, exploring Mayan ruins, or snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef, this local guide will help you pack smart — and travel light.

If you’re planning your first trip to the country, check out our Ultimate Belize Travel Guide for insider tips on where to go, what to do, and when to visit.

Belize Packing Basics

Belize’s tropical climate means you’ll be enjoying warm temperatures year-round — usually between 75°F and 85°F (24–29°C). The vibe is laid-back, so comfort and practicality win over style. Here’s what you really need:

Clothing Essentials:

  • Lightweight, breathable fabrics (cotton or linen)

  • Swimsuits (you’ll want at least two)

  • Cover-ups or light shirts for sun protection

  • Shorts, sundresses, and T-shirts

  • A light rain jacket or poncho (especially June–October)

  • Comfortable sandals and flip-flops

  • One pair of closed-toe shoes or sneakers (for tours and ruins)

Pro Tip: Pack light! Most visitors end up wearing swimsuits and beachwear most days. Laundry services are widely available.

Sunscreen, Bug Spray & Self-Care Must-Haves

Belize’s sun can be strong — especially on the water. Protect yourself (and our reefs):

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (non-toxic, zinc-based)

  • Insect repellent with DEET or natural citronella

  • Aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion

  • Personal medications and small first-aid kit

  • Hand sanitizer and travel wipes

Local Tip: Avoid aerosol sunscreens — they can damage coral reefs and stain fabrics.

Adventure & Excursion Gear

Whether you’re snorkeling, hiking, or exploring caves, these extras make a big difference:

  • Snorkel gear (optional – many tours provide this)

  • Dry bag for boat trips

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Quick-dry towel

  • Hat and polarized sunglasses

  • Lightweight daypack for tours

  • Waterproof phone pouch for photos on the reef

Bonus: Pack an underwater camera or GoPro — Belize’s coral reefs and marine life are spectacular.

Travel Documents & Tech

  • Valid passport (check that it’s not expiring soon)

  • Copies of travel insurance and flight details

  • Credit/debit cards (notify your bank)

  • Adapter for U.S.-style plugs (Belize uses 110V like the U.S.)

  • Portable charger for day trips

  • Lightweight laptop or tablet if you plan to work remotely

What Not to Pack for Belize

Save space by leaving these behind:

  • Heavy jeans or sweaters (you won’t need them)

  • High heels or formalwear (Placencia is ultra-casual)

  • Excess electronics — power and Wi-Fi can be spotty in remote areas

  • Beach towels (provided by most resorts — including ours!)

Local Insight: How Locals Dress in Placencia

Placencia is beach-chic, not fancy. Even at dinner, shorts and sandals are the norm. Bring one nice outfit for an upscale meal at Rumfish y Vino or a beachfront evening at The Ellysian, but otherwise — think tropical casual.

At Toucan Jack’s Tiki Bar here at Ocean Breeze, you’ll fit right in with your flip-flops and a smile.

Packing Tips by Season

Dry Season (November–April):

  • Light layers and swimwear

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • A sun hat and sunglasses

Rainy Season (May–October):

  • Lightweight rain gear

  • Extra insect repellent

  • Waterproof shoes or sandals

Weather changes quickly, but it’s almost always warm and welcoming.
