Sleeping Giant Belize

Discover one of Belize’s most iconic landmarks—and why it’s a must-see on your next trip to Placencia.

What Is the Sleeping Giant of Belize?

If you’ve ever driven the Hummingbird Highway, you’ve likely noticed a breathtaking mountain ridge that—at just the right angle—looks like a giant man lying on his back. That’s the Sleeping Giant, a natural formation in the Maya Mountain Range, one of Belize’s most photographed and beloved landmarks.

The “Sleeping Giant” represents the soul of Belize—majestic, tranquil, and deeply tied to its natural and cultural heritage.

The Story Behind the Sleeping Giant

According to Belizean legend, the formation depicts a Maya warrior who protected his people. When peace returned, he laid down to rest, his body becoming part of the mountains. To this day, locals say his spirit continues to guard the forests and rivers of the region.

The Sleeping Giant is even featured on Belize’s $100 note, symbolizing national pride and unity with nature.

Where to See the Sleeping Giant

The best view of the Sleeping Giant is along Mile 25 of the Hummingbird Highway, near the village of St. Margaret’s. You can enjoy panoramic views right from the roadside, or hike the trails at the Ian Anderson's Caves Branch. We partnered with  Ian Anderson's Caves Branch so contact us for our Jungle/Beach Package!

If you’re staying in Placencia, it’s about a two-hour scenic drive, making it a perfect day trip through the heart of Belize.
